Axiom verge 2 xbox1/29/2024 ![]() They were often super high above you, so you just had to know when and where (because their attack patterns are not consistent) their rain would fall on you ahead of time which felt unfair. Those mushroom guys with the rain attack are a great example of an enemy that's just shit. I found myself often just spamming long ranged abilities and hoping I didn't run out of ammo, because approaching enemies was basically asking to take damage or wasting multiple parries. I also feel like the enemy design wasn't transparent enough or just plain stupid, especially the further in you got. It's not like you had a lot of skill slots, either. This pretty much forced you to waste a skill slot, if not two, on the parry abilities, even if you didn't really want to. Your only guaranteed defense was a dodge, but if you end up on an enemy you take damage even if they weren't attacking. ![]() It felt like they were going for a 2D Souls-like, except took only the annoying aspects of the Souls games. I stopped playing when I was in the castle area because they constantly forced fights that were just not enjoyable. To add on a bit, at least personally, while it was a combat focused game I felt the combat to not be that amazing. The closest thing to it is the dark/light world from a Link to the Past, and figuring out where to go next or how to grab an item is similarly rewarding.Ībsolute treasure of a game if you can approach it on its own terms. The map coordinates and the two worlds that superimpose themselves are brilliant ideas, that I have never seen in a Metroidvania before. It’s a joy to get new upgrades and they are never exactly what you think they will be. I found that choice very refreshing and I’m glad Happ had the courage to make the game he wanted, because it’s easily one of the best Metroidvanias of the past few years, in large part because it’s so focused on world design and systems. This sequel focuses almost exclusively on exploration, combat is purposefully almost optional and there are practically no boss fights. I will start off by saying that if you play Axiom Verge 2 with the hope that it will be more of the same, you will probably be sorely disappointed.
